Aspiring to excellence in rural healthcare.
Arran Medical Group is a training practice within the Ayrshire & Arran (West of Scotland) training scheme, and has been training GPs since 2004.
Arran is a unique place in which to undertake GP training. In particular it is an excellent launch pad for those interested in pursuing a career in rural practice, as AMG provides all medical services that would be expected in a rural/remote area (core primary care, community hospital, BASICS etc). The focus is of course on fostering good exposure to core general practice: consulting, longitudinal care and teamwork… As well as the exams and eportfolio! However other opportunities are available to experience the wider aspects of rural practice, including our community hospital and prehospital immediate care.
We encourage any trainees who are interested in doing their GP training on Arran to get in touch as soon as possible. There are pros and cons of the MTAS application system, and being part of a training area that includes urban and rural placements. We are keen to identify those trainees who are keen to embrace the challenges of living on an island, coping with ferry disruption and the lack of a fixed cinema, and the stimulation of broad general practice, stunning scenery and excellent training opportunities.
We are very happy to facilitate visits so you can see the island for yourself. Please do get in touch if you wish to find out more or arrange a visit. Dr Guthrie and Dr Greg Hamill oversee GP training on Arran.
