Riverside Medical Practice is well established training practice which offers a unique perspective on General Practice and GP training. Being a semi-rural practice with 4 sites (Patna, Coylton, Dalrymple and Rankinston) we cover a wide area with differing populations. Instead of working in one clinic all day, as GPs do in town, the trainee can work in different villages separated by glorious Ayrshire countryside.
The main clinic in Patna is near to Ayr hospital and only a 20-minute drive from Ayr. The practice is easily commutable from Glasgow (less than an hour), Kilmarnock or Ayr. The clinic in Patna (opened 2010) is purpose built and boasts excellent facilities. There is a dedicated Trainee consulting room adjacent to the Trainer’s room which is ideal for video consultations. There is a library with good IT facilities. Few practice premises reach this standard and as a result Patna clinic is used for the annual CSA practice for Ayrshire and Arran ST3s.
The population served by Riverside is diverse covering former mining villages, two nursing homes, young professionals and significant areas of deprivation. There is high morbidity and high demand. The experience gained is therefore broad, preparing the trainee for a career in General Practice.
All doctors and staff as well as the community team are committed to training and previous trainees have commented how welcoming the entire team is. Communication is key within the practice and the Trainee is fully involved in the weekly Practice meetings and monthly Clinical meetings which involve District Nursing Staff, Community Mental Health, Social Work and Hospice Care.
The practice holds clinics in Asthma, Diabetes, COPD, Cardiovascular Disease, Contraception and Stroke and there are opportunities to work with other members of the Primary Care Team.
Since we started training in this practice in 1984 many GPs have trained at Riverside. Many have opted to stay in the area including three of our current partners.
Should you decide to train here we can offer you a warm welcome and excellent support throughout your GP training years.
